Gusseted Bag Types: Side vs Bottom

When it comes to gusseted bags, there are two different types in the marketplace: side and bottom. Let's take a look to learn more about these types of bags.

Side Gusset

Side gusset bags have extra material on the side, which enables the package to expand and support additional weight and items. Due to the design of a side gusset bag, it gives the packaging a shape that is less boxy. What this does is save shelf space. However, it can be more difficult to display these products, since they are not conducive to stacking on top of one another.

Bottom Gusset

A bottom gusset bag has extra material and support at the bottom of the bag. This allows for the package to stand upright and be more versatile in shape and size when compared to a side gusset bag.

Applications

Here are the various applications for side and bottom gusset plastic bags.

Side Gusset

In general, side gusset bags are used to package food and food related products, like snack, dry ingredients, coffee, and tea. However, side gusset bags have also been used for other products, like clothing and personal care products.

Bottom Gusset

Bottom gussets are used for many different types of packaging applications, such as snacks, liquid products, sanitary products, pharmaceutical products and baking powder.

How To Choose Between Side vs Bottom Gusset

When you are choosing between a side gusset bag or a bottom gusset bag, it will depend on the product and your preference. A side gusset bag will likely take up less shelf space, whereas a bottom gusset bag will likely be more appealing to display. You might want your package to be designed as a lay flat or stand up. Or perhaps as stackable or non-stackable. Either option lends itself to a certain type of gusset bag. For more information about our selection of gusseted bags, please reach out to us today.
